ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING PANCYPRIAN ASSOCIATION BEEKEEPING
ANNUAL GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE PANCYPRIAN ASSOCIATION OF BEEKEEPERS
The annual General Assembly of the Pancyprian Association of Beekeepers took place at the Environmental Information Center of the Mountainous Region of Larnaca in Skarinou, on January 26, 2013. The meeting was attended by the Director of the Department of Agriculture, Mrs. Androula Georgiou, the officer of Beekeeping Mr. Christos Tofaris, the head of Health Services Mr. Christos Christou, the Senior Forestry Officer Mr. Takis Papachristoforou, the member of Parliament Mr. Kyriakos Hatzigiannis, by representatives of agricultural associations and of the Larnaca District Development Agency and by beekeepers.
The president of the Association read the report of activities and the Cashier the financial report. The Association honored, by giving a commemorative plaque, Mr. Takis Papachristoforou, Senior Forestry Officer, for his contribution to the establishment of the National Beekeeping Park of Cyprus.
Subsequently, there were presentations on issues that are of interest to beekeepers. Mr. Papachristoforou presented the following topic: “The bee plants of Cyprus” and discussed with members of the audience issues related with bee flora. The President of the Board of Directors, Mr. Charalambos Christodoulou, gave an update on labeling and misleading labels on packages of honey and urged the members of the Association to follow carefully the regulations.
The secretary of the Board of Directors, Mr. Demetris Papacostas, analyzed the objectives and the goals of the Honey Network “En meli” which has been established in the District of Larnaca in cooperation with the Larnaca District Development Agency for the goal of promoting honey.
Agriculturist Mrs. Christina Christodoulou, outlined the procedures which were followed in the two Pancyprian Epidemiological Surveys conducted for Nosema, presented the results and offered advice for the practical handling of the problem. Finally, there was discussion on such topics as the analysis of honey, inspections of honey laboratories, imports of honey from third countries, unfair competition, spraying citrus trees and the promotion of Cypriot honey.
