ENVIRONMENT AND QUALITY OF LIFE

Modern life is characterized by scientific and technological progress, as well as the great catastrophes caused by natural and anthropogenic causes, such as earthquakes, wars, disease, pollution, the various accidents on land, air and water caused by a rather selfish way of life. The need to respect and protect the environment, the natural and the social alike, is a desideratum. Multiple problems come about and demand urgent solutions. A large proportion of people goes without food, are without a home, lacking the basic elements of an acceptable way of life. It suffices to say that 75% of the 49 million deaths each year is due to diseases which are linked to the environment and our way of life.

Environmental Information Center of the Mountainous Region of Larnaca, taking into consideration the concerns of our fellow citizens for the aforementioned problems, organized a lectured on “The environment and quality of life” on January 9, 2013. The speaker was Mr. Charalampos Theopemptou, Commissioner of the Environment.
